Tips |
First and foremost: Be prepared. Know your material.
Please communicate at all times, whether what you want to say is good or bad. Communication is the key to success. Having fun results in satisfaction.
It’s a good idea to discuss your plan and vision with the studio engineer so that all parties can be well prepared for the time ahead.
With each session, be ready with a song and a CD with the current song’s touch or sense. The words and chords are to be supplied by artist.
Where EPS is responsible for the composition of a “song”, the following will be needed:
- the concept of the “song” (melody);
- poem or words;
- a “song” or CD for guidelines of the type of touch or sense that you want for the specific song.
In the event that a cover song is used, the original CD or recording will be needed.
Be prepared for a bit of set-up time. Check out what you can do to use your time constructively while other band members are busy, e.g. a vocalist can warm up his/her voice while the bassist is doing some overdubs, or a guitarist can change that broken string and work it in while the vocalists are tracking a lead vocal.
If you anticipate doing overdubs, take the time to figure out the parts before the session. “Feeling it out” while tracking can be effective but takes time.
Spending studio time rehearsing a tune is a waste of time and money and can bleed energy from the performance.
If you are a vocalist, it’s best if you know your lyrics by heart: reading as you perform distracts you from your performance and tends to pull you off mic-axis.
Guitarists should have new strings on their instruments, although preferably a day or two old with a bit of playing in, since brand new strings need to stretch to avoid tuning hassles and also sound ultra bright and “brittle”. Have a set of spares. Also, check intonation to (once again) avoid tuning issues.

Please note:
- No visitors or children are allowed in the studio without prior arrangement.
-
During recordings, no persons will be allowed in the studio other than the recording personnel and the artist(s).
